What is "The Cloud"?
"The cloud" can refer to an almost infinite amount of options...software, platforms and infrastructure that are sold "as a service", remotely through the Internet. Typically, the seller has actual servers which host products and services from a remote location.
"Cloud" Solutions can be any of the following:
Co-Location - Utilizing a 3rd party location to host your servers with minimal involvement by the service provider, usually limited to space, power, and bandwidth.
Hosting - Utilizing a third party and their infrastructure to host and maintain your business applications only
Consumer Cloud - Consumer solutions such as Netflix, iCloud, gmail, and Dropbox
Public Cloud - Solutions accessed via the internet delivered via a shared environment
Private Cloud - Data Centric solution in a closed environment that is not accessible by the public. Usually resides within a company's domain and firewalls and not readily accessible by the web.
IaaS - Infrastructure as a Service - Severs, virtual machines, and other network services are provided via a remote data center under a utility model where the end user pays only for what they use.
DaaS - Desktop as a Service - the user's desktop is offered virtually from a data center utilizing web applications or VDI technology.
PaaS - Platform as a Service - Third party vendor provides a computing platform for development, including operating system, programing language execution environment, database, and web server.
SaaS - Software provider offers their solution through a hosted platform on a pay per user monthly subscription and is accessed through the web.
What does that mean for me?
Virtual Computing means you're not chained to your desk at the office, even for large data users such as graphic designers, architects, and engineers. Your "Cloud" Computer runs just like it is sitting on your desk, except that it resides in a data center. Your data, your programs, and your computer are now accessible...ANYWHERE! Work from any interface and access your own programs and files. No more working at the office until 4am to meet your deadline or losing productivity when the kids are sick or the weather prevents you from getting to the office. Neither lighting nor a cup of coffee can damage a computer that isn't there. Your data is always safe.
"Moving to the Cloud" is not just for the Fortune 500 anymore.
Small and Medium Businesses are now taking advantage of the recent strides in technology, with the top reasons being to improve server utilization, provide a complete backup for their data, incorporate a disaster recovery plan, and allow mobile capabilities so their staff can be more productive.
